Understanding the Problem
We have noticed that there is a very big problem with the waste of paper in school. One Problem is that many students and teachers use lots of paper than after they finish the topic they throw away the paper, which is a giant waste. Once the students study the notes that are on the papers and they take the test they no longer need those papers, so they go to waste. Most students in our school would agree that there is a giant waste of paper, because we use too much of it. Everyone knows that paper comes from tree, tress produce oxygen, and oxygen helps use live; if we know that wouldn’t it be smart of schools and businesses to get ride of paper. In retrospect, less paper, means more trees, more trees means more oxygen and then can help us. Wasted paper can kill the planet and can harm everyone living on it. When students throw away paper it is like throwing away or wasting a tree. The wasted paper problem in schools can harm many in a lot of ways. About 100 billion sheets of paper are used a day in the United States. About 33 percent or paper is recycled, 33 percent of it is whole trees, and 34 percent of it is turned into wood chips. All of this can harm our planet and can pollute the Earth with the pollution in our landfills.
Textbook are also a big waste of paper because they cost a lot of money because of all the paper from the in it, but then the information in the textbook only stays good for a couple of years. After the information is no good and we get new textbooks, the school just throws them away, wasting all the paper and money. They make digital textbooks and they have software which allows students and teachers to share and take notes on iPads or computers. Schools are wasting a bunch of paper due to textbooks and classroom notes, this problem needs a solution. One teacher in a school copies notes on a sheet paper for at least 200 students multiply that by almost 90 teachers you would get 18,000 wasted pieces of paper, and what happens to that paper after the students are done with it?
With that much paper going to in the trash schools are wasting a lot of money that could be used on getting iPads and apps for iPads to help student’s education. Studies show that teachers and school advisors would like to get iPads for students, but are afraid of them not being responsible enough to use them in the correct way, but there is solution to this thinking. When setting up the iPads, teachers could set that the student’s iPads only show what the teacher iPads shows. Also, it is the student’s choices to learn or fool around with the iPads and iPad apps. Lastly, advisories could only get apps on the iPads that would help learning and not for them to play. Teachers and advisories can help prevent students from using them in the wrong way, by taking precautions and reducing the percent of them just playing on it.
Currently, in some schools they have iPads, but the students are not allowed to use them unless the teacher signs them out from the media center. Students can not freely work on the iPads or work on them unless their teacher has signed them out. Almost every, student schools would agree that iPads can help improve their learning and they would love to have one. When students work on iPads they have a more hand on learning and its more interactive learning. Studies show that when students have a more hand on learning or interactive learning they remember the information better and they get better grades.
The Westfield Board of Education, and state or national government needs to be involved because this rule needs to become a nation wide rule, and we need the government to provide funding for the iPads. Government plays a very important roll for getting iPads and eliminating paper from schools. The government has to over see want happens in the school and they control what goes to each school and what supplies they get. The government is needed to cut out paper and put in iPads.
